Before he found a measure of mainstream success with films like The Elephant Man, Dune, Blue Velvet, and the TV sensation Twin Peaks, there was the little film that first brought David Lynch to the attention of moviegoers everywhere: Eraserhead. A surreal, often caustic fever-dream of a movie, Eraserhead posits an industrial nightmare-scape where a disassociated man (Jack Nance) agrees to marry his pregnant girlfriend, only to have the baby turn out to be a squealing reptilian mutoid. Eraserhead defies almost any subtexual reading (though “fear of fatherhood” might hold some water), and will not likely be forgotten by anyone who sees it. This evocative British quad uses Nance’s finger-in-a-light-socket hairdo as a visual icon, with eye-popping green titles.
