Saul Bass’s film posters are characterised by a distinctive typography and minimalistic style. Blessed with the gift of identifying the one image which symbolised the movie, Bass then recreated it in a strikingly modern style. This ‘Anatomy Of A Murder’ poster is arguably his best design. There’s no misreading the broken figure, the cocked head, even before you catch the title. This poster featuring the silhouette of a corpse jarringly dissected into seven pieces, makes both a pun on the film’s title and captures the moral ambiguities within which this court room drama is immersed. Bass created some of his best known posters for films directed by Otto Preminger, Alfred Hitchcock, Billy Wilder, and Stanley Kubrick among others. And his last commissioned film poster was created for Steven Spielberg’s ’Schindler’s List’ in 1993 but it was never distributed. And this Saul Bass artwork is one of the most elusive one sheets of the 1950’s!
