Alfred Hitchcock’s story tells of a spinsterish young woman (Joan Fontaine) who revolts against her parents by marrying a playboy, Cary Grant, who, although charming, is always scheming up disreputable business deals. The suspense mounts when Fontaine comes to the conclusion that Grant intends to do away with her in order to collect her inheritance. The best actress Oscar was given for Ms. Fontaine’s splendid performance.
