Artwork by Heinz Edelmann. After two feature films and a disappointing TV special, the Beatles – John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr – were less than enthusiastic about participating in another movie, but saw this animated feature as a relatively painless way to fulfill their contractual obligations. When the Fab Four saw a rough cut of this charming animated fable, however, they were so impressed that they agreed to film a live-action sequence for the film’s end. Reminiscent of the psychedelic stylings of 1960s icon Peter Max, the movie tells the story of the Beatles’ quest to free the peaceful Pepperland from the influence of the evil Blue Meanies. Of course, like the Liverpudlian Lad’s previous films, this was primarily a showcase for their music, including such hit songs as “All You Need is Love,” “Eleanor Rigby,” “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds,” “When I’m Sixty-Four,” and the title track.

The music-loving inhabitants of Pepperland are under siege by the Blue Meanies, a nasty group of music-hating creatures. The Lord Mayor of Pepperland (Dick Emery) dispatches sailor Old Fred (Lance Percival) to Liverpool, England, where he is to recruit the help of the Beatles (John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Ringo Starr). The sympathetic Beatles ride a yellow submarine to the occupied Pepperland, where the Blue Meanies have no chance against the Fab Four’s groovy tunes.

Heinz Edelmann designed three different posters on this title. There was a first advance, with limited artwork, a second advance, with added artwork to the first advance, and then this final piece with the full artwork and credits.
This animated musical fantasy was inspired by the song Yellow Submarine by John Lennon and Paul McCartney. The animation features songs by The Beatles. The Beatles appear as animated characters in the film, with their voices being done by other actors, until the final scene, when their real voices are used.
