This 1954 musical remake starred Judy Garland, who was making her return to the silver screen after a four-year absence. James Mason portrays an alcoholic movie star who meets Garland on a chance encounter and decides to give the aspiring but unknown actress a career boost. Soon they fall in love and marry, but tension and tragedy develop as Garland’s career continues to soar and Mason’s continues to plummet. One of the facets that sets this version apart from other films in the genre is its magnificent musical score by Harold Arlen and Ira Gershwin. In 2000, the 1954 film was selected for preservation in the US National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”
