Based on Conrad’s “Heart of Darkness”, the making of this film was nearly as turbulent as the original story. It spanned three years, with Coppola self-funding due to budget issues, and Martin Sheen suffering a heart attack on set. Despite these challenges, the film is now considered a classic, featuring memorable scenes and representing America’s eventual reckoning with the trauma of Vietnam (followed by a wave of related films). The poster effectively captures the descent into the unknown, with the haunting image of Colonel Kurtz (Marlon Brando). The original artwork by Bob Peak featured all three main actors (Sheen, Brando & Duvall), yet Duvall’s face was ultimately removed due to a disagreement with Coppola.
