Probably the most collectable of all war film Quad posters. “The Great Escape” tells the true story of a mass allied escape from a German POW camp. Although seventy-six POW’s escaped only three made it back home & fifty of the re-captured were executed by the Nazis. Steve McQueen, “the king of cool”, struts his stuff magnificently in the film, culminating in a breathtaking attempt to leap the barbed wire into Switzerland on his motorbike. The choice of McQueen in the heroic central role made the film more marketable in the American market. Interestingly the UK Quad poster depicts McQueen in an RAF jacket for similar purposes (ie, to appeal to the British audience) although McQueen never wears this in the film.
One of the biggest films of all times, and one of the hardest British film posters to find…This is a VERY RARE poster that doesn’t often appear for sale. Art by Frank McCarthy artwork.
