Designed by Saul Bass and Joseph Caroff, original United Artists 1-Sheet Poster, for the Jerome Robbins and Robert Wise iconic musical, WEST SIDE STORY (1961) starring Natalie Wood, George Chakiris, Richard Beymer, Russ Tamblyn, and Rita Moreno. This film was a seminal adaptation of the Shakespearian tragedy, Romeo and Juliet. Warring New York City gangs replace the feuding families from the play. Shooting lasted for 6 months, and sound mixing and editing took another 7 months to complete. The film was a box office smash hit and won 10 Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor to Chakiris, Best Supporting Actress to Moreno, and Best Director to Robbins and Wise.
